Loops with LED -The phrase “loop-powered” simply denotes the fact that the device in question is powered by the 4-20 mA process signal that is attached to it. This is achievable because the 4-20 mA loop’s constant current ensures that voltage drops brought on by devices powered by the loop do not alter the current signal. Without the need for a separate or independent power source, loop-powered devices are electronic devices that can be connected in a transmitter loop, typically a current loop. The electricity from the current flowing through the loop is intended to be used by these devices.

If we build the transmitter to be loop-powered, we can transmit analogue information and electrical power over the same two wires utilising 4 to 20 milliamps DC.

The transmitter receives current via the wire from the power supply. The current flow is controlled by the transmitter. Only the loop current, or a current proportional to the parameter being monitored, is permitted to pass through the transmitter. Through the wire, the current returns to the controller. The 4-20 mA signal is favoured over the 0-20 mA signal because it makes it easier to find a broken wire. A 4-20 mA transmitter will produce nothing if the current being monitored is zero.
