Abdominal Sponge

Abdominal Sponge

Abdominal Sponge -a flat sponge that was once used as packing during surgery to prevent viscera from obstructing or closing the wound, as a covering to protect the wound from tissue damage, and as absorbent. The absorbable laparoscopic cigarette sponge is a considerable advancement over earlier versions of similar devices. It can be used to retract, dissect, and control small regions of haemorrhage in a manner similar to how a sponge is used in open surgery, making laparoscopy safer and more accurate.
Gossypiboma is a term for a retained surgical sponge or swab that is derived from the Latin words Gossypium (cotton) and boma (Swahili, place of concealment). Gauze sponges are a disposable medical supply that is frequently used in both surgery and medicine. They are often constructed of gauze and are used to clean wounds and absorb blood and other fluids. They are known as surgical sponges when they are utilised in surgery.
By applying pressure to the bleeding wound, a laparotomy sponge can also be used to stop the flow of blood. Sponges are produced using only cotton, and they are available in a range of sizes, thread yarns, and meshes. The sponges’ construction guarantees a high degree of softness and absorption.

In every procedure where the prospect of a sponge being retained arises, sponges should be included. — at the moment of the scrub person’s or the circulating nurse’s permanent release
